Every person who plans on doing business online should realize that they have to start building a list.  Even though you might have read dozens of articles and looked at the same amount of other websites and than finally decided that it’s time for you to have your own email opt in list.  There are still certain strategies that you must follow in order to be successful with building a list.

You can start by creating an opt in box just like everyone else and begin collecting names and email addresses.  Once you do that you can begin writing them and making offers.  However, unless you do it correctly you could start losing money, depending upon how you set up your opt in.  

Just like everyone else that jumps on the band wagon and thinks it is so easy, you start realizing it several months down the road.  You might have collected a big list during that time, but you soon find out that very few of them buy anything.

So, by this time you are wondering where you went wrong.  How come other people are making money with there list and you aren’t?  The answer is simple; you just jumped in without doing any homework.  Basically this is the biggest mistake that most online marketers make when it comes to building a list.


People automatically think because they put up an email opt in list and visitors sign up with their list, that money will just roll in.  Keep thinking like that and you will be broke in no time.  You have to understand, there are no secrets to online business, but there are techniques, strategies and tactics that are used to achieve success.

How to build a list the right way requires some strategies that will make the difference for you in building a list.  If you already sell products or services from your own website than get your customers to trust you and your products first.  This is just common sense.

Write as many articles as you can, before you start an opt in list.  Keep to the topic of your website.  This will help in gaining credibility and will also put you in as an authority of the subject.

Get involved with social networks and forums.  Let people know who you are and seek friendship first.

Also, find a product or service that people want and need.  You may not be an expert at it, but with a little research and effort you can write and talk about it with some general knowledge.

While it is true that it is best to sell something that you have interest in, there are not many people who have the same interest as you if you decide to sell something that is not entirely popular or profitable. Do your research well and you will see the profits come in. Also provide your subscribers with promotional material that they could actually use and spread around.

Make friends with other opt-in list users.  This is where a good mentor comes in.  Your mentor will obviously have one or several opt in lists, and who better to have as a friend than a mentor that is already a success.  While different situations take place for different people, the general idea can still be very helpful. There are many things to avoid and a good mentor will be able to tell you which ones.

Building a list will not happen overnight and you have to start from the ground and work your way up.  Just remember, the money will only come in when the consumers and subscribers believe and trust in you. They want a product or service that could be a good exchange for their money. People are not going to buy something out of your recommendation if they don’t know you.
